Whether you’re starting a company or seeking other legal services, under Serbian law, the legal profession represents an independent and autonomous service providing legal assistance to individuals and legal entities. Legal assistance, as defined by Serbian law, includes:

1) providing oral and written legal advice and opinions;
2) drafting lawsuits, requests, proposals, petitions, legal remedies, complaints, and other submissions;
3) drafting contracts, wills, settlements, statements, general and individual acts, and other documents;
4) representing and defending individuals and legal entities;
5) mediating in order to conclude a legal transaction or amicably resolve disputes and contentious relationships;
6) performing other legal assistance services on behalf of and for the account of a domestic or foreign individual or legal entity, on the basis of which rights are realized or freedoms and other interests are protected.

The unauthorized provision of legal assistance constitutes a criminal offense in the Republic of Serbia. In addition to the aforementioned description of the activities that fall within the legal profession, lawyers are highly qualified professionals and are responsible for providing legal assistance to clients, and are required to adhere to the code of professional ethics for lawyers, which, among other things, serves to maintain the standard of conduct and an adequate level of service provided by lawyers to clients. Although most people associate the concept of a lawyer with a court or defence in court proceedings, business lawyers primarily serve to prevent disputes from arising in the first place.
